Nuuksio National Park is a short drive from central Helsinki, yet it feels far from the city: spruce forest, frozen lakes and quiet trails under snow. It is the setting for this small-group husky safari.
The visit starts with the dogs. Your musher introduces the team and shows you the basics before you set off. In good snow you ride a traditional sled; early and late in the season the team pulls a wheeled cart on the same forest trails. You can drive the sled yourself or ride as a passenger, as your guide advises.
Halfway through, you stop by a lake or in a sheltered spot. Your guide lights a campfire and serves Finnish snacks such as Karelian pies, with coffee made over the open flame. Groups are small, up to six guests, and the outing can be made private on request. It is an easy addition to a Helsinki stay for families and couples who want a taste of winter without flying to Lapland.
